Portland is full of quirky people, incredible art and new opportunities. It is home to thousands of people who love exploring and being creative. Looking to get on the Oregon payroll? Portland could be the perfect place for you. Here are four things you may not have known about this city.
1. The City is Named Off of a Gamble
That’s right. The city was named by a coin toss. The two landowners couldn’t decide, so they let the coin talk. Whoever won got to name it after their hometown. If Francis Pettygrove hadn’t have won, the city would have been named after Boston, Massachusetts.
2. Portland Has the Largest Bookstore
In the middle of town lies a wonderland called Powell’s City of Books. Bookworms can get lost in this store for hours, where hundreds of bookcases are lined with fascinating books. There are over four million books there. Book ladders like the ones from Beauty and the Beast are there to make the searching process easier.
3. The City’s Slogan Is “Keep Portland Weird”
If you weren’t convinced that Portland is a little odd, one of the official slogans of the city is “Keep Portland Weird.” This city is an advocate of creativity and art. You’ll see hundreds of beautiful wall art, and you might even catch the occasional street artist, such as the Darth Vader unicyclist.
4. Portland Has the Smallest Park
Mill Ends Park is the smallest part of the world. It’s 452 square inches and is said to be the place where leprechauns have picnics. It became an official city park in 1976.
These are just a few of the cool facts about Portland, there is so much to explore, listen to and eat. This is a great place for artists and other job seekers to live, and it can be a lot of fun.
